I've had one of these for a about 3 years now. Just a heads-up to people having trouble with the belt - YOU CAN ADJUST THE TENSION ON THE BELT. Read the owner's manual or contact their customer service. Someone talked me through it on the phone and it works a lot better now. Also, don't "flick" the lever to engage and disengage the blade, if you move it slowly you will be less likely to drop the belt. Overall, this thing gets the job done for a lot less than the Honda.

I received the Swisher 44 12.5 HP pull-start trail cutter a week ago and have used it fairly heavily on some rough terrain since then. It works as advertised and makes short work of heavy brush. I'm pulling it behind a Yamaha Rhino 450 with no difficulties. The Briggs & Stratton engine runs fine and starts easily enough that I would have a hard time justifying the additional cost of the electric starter. So far I have no regrets in purchasing this unit instead of a DR. My only complaint is the high cost of shipping, but I don't have access to a local dealer, so what're you gonna do? I wish the hitch attachment had a bit more vertical adjustment available, but I can work around that. So far, so good!

I've used this quite a lot on my 13 acres in the past year and a half, pulling it behind a Honda 350 Rancher ATV. As far as performance, it really gets the job done. The engine and the heavy blades together make pretty quick work of thick stuff, including saplings. Still, it does get bogged down on occasion and die.

My main problem has been with the belt/pulley/tensioner system. Burned through one belt pretty quick. Belt jumps off the pulleys a lot unless the belt tension is adjusted perfectly. Finally, after a year, I got it exactly right, and things have been going good. I wish there were even a brief mention of how to adjust the belt tension in the manual, but there isn't.

Also, I mowed over the control yoke cable. My fault. So I had to shorten it and attach it directly to the mower, which is fine. Also, it's a bit hard to start. A couple of the plastic parts in the starter broke this summer, but I can still get it started for the time being.

I've also never been able to get the mower to ride perfectly level. As it is, the front rides lower than the back, and obviously this isn't ideal for any mower. Still, it works. There just needs to be another inch or so of adjustment room in the hitch assembly for it to work with my ATV.

PRO: gets the job done, reasonable price, ruggedly built, solid engine

CONS: belt belt belt, starting, hard to "level" behind my ATV

I purchased the Swisher 44 about a year ago and thought I'd wait until I did the first oil change at 25 hours to review the product. I had previously purchased a Predator 24 to get at "hard to reach and rough" areas, and was quite pleased. The Swisher 44 was planned to take care of about 8 acres smoother areas in a neglected pasture.

I have not had the problems others have mentioned. At 25 hours I changed the oil and tensioned the belt, and I'm ready to go again. It has done everything I had hoped it would, from tackling 10-12 foot high blood weed to chopping small mesquite trees...some probably in excess of 1 ½ inches in diameter.

Which brings me to the tires: the tires are appreciably tube wheel barrow tires. Even after using "slime", I have had several flats. My last effort was to install a tube made by Slime. It seems to be holding. It would have been nice to have tubeless tires of some substance, but I can change that if need be.

The assembly instruction could have been clearer, but it wasn't difficult to figure it out. I had to modify the hitch because I hooked it to a garden tractor, but that was not difficult either.

I would, and have, recommended this product to others. I've kept the acreage in control: the blood weed is gone and the mesquites are in check. Towing slowly, it takes about an hour per acre and the results are wonderful. Swisher, Inc. should be congratulated for developing this product and selling it at this cost. It is a GREAT value.

I just got this mower last week. Yesterday was my first chance to hook it up to the ATV and start clearing my property. Because this is my first effort there are always hidden rocks, chunks of wood, etc. that I miss. Although I try to avoid these things I have hit a few. So far, no damage to the machine, and it is doing an excellant job of turning my poison oak, manzanita, and slash into mulch. I am very pleased with it. I only bogged it down once when I dove into the middle of a blackberry patch that was as tall as my ATV. It didn't quit, ut I had to slow down a little. Good product!!

After reading reviews of spreaders labeled as "junk", I wanted to be sure and get a good one. This one should easily handle my four-acre lawn without a lot of re-loading. From the 13" pneumatic tires, to the gauge of steel used, to how incredibly well the parts were blister packed in assembly sequence, this is a quality product from top to bottom. The instructions were fairly easy to follow, took a little over an hour to assemble. It has such a quality feel and construction, I can't imagine they could have made it any better. I wanted a plastic cart because my dad has gone through many inwhich the metal rusted out or warped because the gauge steel used was not strong enough. I feel this cart will satisfy my needs for many years to come.

It was easy to assemble(about 1/2 hour) and it seems ridged enough to handle hauling dirt, rock, etc. I like the idea of taking the sides off to move tree logs, 2x4's or other long items. I would give it 5 stars but I think it is pricy. Plastic is cheap and they probably use regrinded plastics anyway so I feel prices could be more competitive with traditional metal carts.

I just used this rake to dethatch my lawn this weekend. Two passes at a 45 degree angle to each other, followed by a fairly close mow. I have about 2/3 acre in lawn and wound up emptying the grass catcher (commercial mower, no less) nearly 40 times! (That's two or three passes worth of mowing ...) I didn't add weight and set the height just a little lower than instructed. This is a minimal rake, but works. For less money you can buy the Brinly 40", but it's significantly lighter. For a bit more than twice as much you can but a John Deere with a lever to raise and lower the wheels, but the extra convenience just wasn't worth the money for a once-a-year job. I regard this rake as just heavy enough, just wide enough, and it worked just fine.

This sprayer is not yet designed. The hoses are too short -- by a frustrating few inches. The pressure gage is directly on the output of the pump and therfore oscillates so violently one cannot see the needle. (I will add a damper to prevent a fatigue failure of the gage.) The connector to the spray wand broke off during my first use session.(I have replaced the thin-walled plastic part with a brass part. I have replaced the cheap plastic hose clamps with real clamps to stop the leaks. The pickpup hose is curled so that the pickup screen would not stay near the bottom of the tank. I have added a weight to the end of the pickup hose.

This product is not badly designed. It has not been designed at all.

This sprayer does work but I encountered the following problems:

1. When full or near full the liquid solution comes out of the top where the hoses enter the tank spilling in areas not intended for the spray. The solution will also come out when going up or down hills if it reaches the hose areas.

2. When the switch is turned off after spraying, solution continues to drain from the boom at a fairly substantial rate. I have to turn the valve off to stop the flow.

3. There is no way that this unit will put out the maximum amount of solution that is advertised.

I also own another spray rig from Northern Supply that does not have the above problems. I chose to buy this rig since I needed a bigger tank and it has its own wheels. I got those features but I wish I'd have gone with the Northern version.

On the up side, it did spray well enough and with sufficient amount of herbicide to take care of my pasture weeds.

Everything worked as expected. The 25 gallon capacity helps make quick work of spraying a large yard. The long reaching additional hand-held spray wand is very helpful getting to corners and hard to reach areas. If you order this to be shipped, you might count on buying a couple of extra spray nozzles at your local farmer's supply store, as they are easily broken during shipment.

When I was ready to hook up the mower to my wheel Horse I knew that set up was one of the crazest set ups I've ever seen. I changed the angle of the draw bar hitch to match my tractor and then rewelded it. This is a much better set up than what they had. After mowing the grass the third time I noiced the grass was really packed in the front j channel.I cleaned and rust proofed the channel and then took 1/16 strip of metal and welded it to the j channel. I think 3 or 4 more hp.would be better and maybe a kohler instead of B.S. I now have a mower that's easy to hook up, no more grass packed in front of the knives and it does a beautiful job of mowing. The other problem I had was the small belt broke after ten hours, so I replaced both belts with Napa belts

I put the swisher bush hog through the works today. The 14.5 hp peformed like a champ. Of course this is the first time i used it since i received it last month. I had to repair four wheeler first. It was rough cutting. Small stumps and limbs, going thru small ditches and old four wheeler tracks that kids had made on the property when the last owners had the property.

It was so rough even though i was going a slow as i could in 1st gear.

The Lock nut that attaches bush hog to four wheeler came off. So I went and got another and the shoot where the grass comes out, one of the nuts feel off of the bolts on that. Anyway I am well satisfied with the performance it game me today. I will get the property plowed up and cleaned up for next cutting and this should make it a lot better.

My father owns one of these wonderful mowers for his 80 acre ranch and it has been extremely reliable which is why I chose this model for my own 40 acres of rolling hills, tree branches, and rocks. I rate Amazon.com and Swicher with "5" but working with Northern Tool has been extremely frustrating. I first tried buying from their web site (twice) and they said they could not run my credit card (then I found the mower on Amazon who ran the card and processed my order within a day). Two weeks later I finally got in contact with N. Tool who said they could not deliver to a P.O. box (my mailing address, they were given the physical of course the day I placed the order). Another week before I got in contact with the shipper who charge me for a lift gate (I do not have a forklift). Now the mower is here (a month later) and the advertized electric stater failed to mention N. Tool does not supply the battery (now I have to make a special trip into town to find and buy a 12 volt battery). Very frustrated at the additional charges and poor customer service! Buy the Swisher but not from this seller.

"Swisher 66" finish mower" 2009-08-28

I bought my 66" Swisher finish mower to mow bahia grass around a 1 acre lake with a slope I don't like to drive too close to the water on. I also offset it and pull behind an older JD 48" lawn tractor and now my 35Hp Branson tractor for mowing 5 acres of flat pasture. I've put about 30 hours on the unit and have no concerns with reliability of the Briggs & Stratton 20 horse or the mechanicals of the unit. I've read reviews where a couple of guys have had problems with belts, pulleys, idlers, etc.

Other than a cut tire when delivered, I've had no issues and would recommend this to anyone who knows how to treat equipment.

I purchased the Brush Cutter version of this mower a few years ago to use mainly on open acreage. When it works, it does a good job, but the first day out, I had problems with it. Almost every time I've used it, I have had problems/repairs. I have replaced numerous belts. I believe while cutting heavy brush, the load on the blade increases, causing the belt to slip, burn and eventually break. The first time I used it, the large nut on the main pulley came loose and everything in the deck was damaged. Another time, the idler pulley assembly came loose, causing the belt to fly off and at the same time, take out the wiring from the clutch and destroy everything in its path. This thing is poorly engineered. I just made repairs again, against my better judgment, took it out to cut brush, not saplings, and the idler assembly loosened again. I put it back together and 1/2 hour later, the belt once again destroyed all of the control wiring.

I had called Swisher initially when it broke the first time. They were nice over the phone, but very matter-of-fact. My unit also had an electric clutch that had to be engaged at full speed only or the unit would stall. It also has pulleys for two belts. They told me two belts was causing the clutches to get destroyed, so they went to one belt. That was my first clue that I was a Beta tester in disguise. The only place this thing is going is to my local junk-yard to be recycled. I will never again purchase a Swisher product. Some of their newer stuff looks OK, but the terrible engineering is what bothered me the most. My next purchase will b e the DR Brush mower. Good Luck if you buy one.

I reviewed all of the available pull behind mowers, and I chose the swisher because it was the widest with the most HP that I could find. Also, I was close to buying the Agri, but those folks couldn't tell me where to buy one, as Sears was out of stock on them.

For the money, this unit is rugged. I did, however, break the drive belt the first day out on it. Probably user error, as I had the tension too tight on that belt.

I rate it a 4 out of 5 because it is a bit loud when it bounces around, if you dont have a real smooth lawn. But I am putting it to the extreme, cutting a large area (4 acres) with various slopes, using a Polaris 425cc ATV.

Same thing happened to me with this product. L shaped center support broke - which caused the axle to bend, which caused the wheel bolts to bend. Further on taking it apart to repair noticed many of the parts were either an inconsistent size or not an appropriate size (from an engineering point of view). This was on the third use - had probably done no more than 10 acres total.

Although assembly was cumbersome, it was not that difficult. My yard is a little over 2 acres. In the first use, the middle brace broke in half and the wheels are not nearly as sturdy as they need to be if you have any amount of weight placed on the plugger.

All in all, I was not pleased with the performance or durability of this product.

The key to making a good purchase is matching a product to your circumstances and this product performed exactly as I had hoped. Other pluggers I researched may make nicer, more uniform plugs but I was concerned about how well they would last on the 3 acre lot in the country with lots of trees. Of the 48" models I read about this one had the heaviest shipping weight so I assumed it would be constructed of the heaviest material. It is well built. Assembly was uncomplicated. I used it on the entire 3 acres 1 day after a rainy spell lasting 2 days. I used 4 bags of sand for weight rather than cinder blocks and it worked flawlessly.

This aerator works as expected and us a very reasonable value. I use this on 2 acre lawn and with proper weight did adequate job of plugging. Suggest using water container for ballast instead of construction blocks as easier to handle. Assembly is not really difficult but a bit time consuming, just be sure to line up axle correctly to avoid rework during assembly. Although not quite as heavy duty as what you would rent from implement dealer, approx 2 uses will pay for itself.

I see larger machines of this nature in the hay fields so thought it would work well on my leaves. It did not. We have a number of Southern oaks in our yard and many leaves in the spring. This rake did a poor job of raking them into windrows. It takes many passes with the rake and even then doesn't get them all. It might work well on a different type of leaf but for the live oaks and similar varieties it just down't work.

The swisher has a plunger button that needed adjustment before I could start it for first use. The hitch bar is too light grade steel and bent easily. I stiffened it by welding rebar on sides. The holes for drop pins stretched out due to same weak steel. The mower did well but seems to gouge and scalp on hilly terrain if not vigil. Pulls easily behind UATV.

"Not As Good As I Hoped" 2008-08-20

I bought my mower to help stay ahead of the weeds on some acreage where I live. At first it did OK, though it was always difficult to start and very loud. The mower was not as efficient as I had been led to believe, often making it necessary to make multiple passes to get the grass cut evenly. I assumed this was due to running over the grass with my ATV, but later learned it was because the mower deck itself was mashing the grass down. The mower lasted approximately 200 hours of mowing before the engine blew, putting the connecting rod through the side of the block. I was never very pleased with the operation of the unit. The blade engage cable broke twice the first week I had it and I re-engineered the linkage to prevent that from happening. When the engine blew, the customer service people simply told me that Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton make suitable replacements -- which are both nearly $500 to replace if I do it myself. I don't plan to repair the mower. There have been some design changes since I bought my mower, so some of the problems may have been fixed. I would personally get a larger mower with a larger engine if I were to replace this one with the same brand.

One of the best features of this spreader is the removable plastic screen in the bin. Given the chunks that inevitably show up in fertilizer products it makes spreading significantly more accurate since you know you are not restricting flow with a solid mass of fertilizer covering the outlets that you have just calibrated. This is only available on the "commercial" Earthway spreaders and given past experiences is worth the difference in price. The spreader is well made but the bin/tub only holds about 10K sq ft. of product. The 2170 has a larger bin but the smaller tank on the 2150 makes this a very stable unit. With my lawn conditions, this was worth the trade off. The solid easily calibrated linkage also appears to be much better than a cable actuated meter. I have only used it a couple of times but so far it appears to be a well made product.

Disappointed in performance, is under powered for most tasks. The machine is difficult to pull behind ATV and get close enough to fence to do and adequate job and then is easily bogged down by grass. The recoil action increases the difficulty in doing a nice job of mowing.The postmaster does have limited application along ditches but again you must move very slowly to allow machine to keep running this can be extremely difficult even in the lowest gear on an ATV. I have owned the postmaster for two years but after initial trial period rarely use the machine. Very disappointed.

"Poor Customer service" 2009-05-13

I purchased this mower on 05/20/08 and I have had to replace the belt about 8 times already. My mower loves the break the middle belt. This is not my biggest problem. I have used my mower about 20 times and the bearings went on the front wheels and the wheel now rubs the frame. I call Frank Lossman in customer service at Swisher who was the must rude customer service person I have talked to. He pretty said it was my fault and was just being smart and I even went as far as asking him why he is being so difficult and rude. He said he was just doing his job. Needless to say, I ended up having to buy the bearings off the internet and swisher would not cover them under warranty. They started go last year around the 8th cut. I was very surprised with the poor customer service. Besides having to replace the belt about every 3 cut and the wheel bearings going bad, it's not too bad of a mower.

It is hard to disconect and connect the quick disconnect system from the frame. Everything does not line up easy. I usually just leae that connect to the frame of my Grizzly quad and just disconnect the mower from the system.

Also the handles that control the height of the deck like to break off to and you have to rig them back on.

"Lot of problems" 2008-07-08

First, I have several Swisher products and am satisfied with the quality of the other products. I now have the mower working but this is after at least two years of more repairing than mowing. Until I made a couple of modifications to the idler pulley, it was impossible to keep the drive belt on. There are other design flaws such as bolt placement that will interfere with the belts. I was going to complain about Swisher customer service but they actually called as I was typing this review and were very helpful.

I had my mower about a month and the T39 belt AND the tension pully broke!! T39 belt provides power from the engine to the pully that drives the mower blades. The lip on the side of the pully broke off!! Never heard of such a thing. A month later the belt broke again. Now, one month later the belt broke yet again.

Also, the description talks about using to winch to raise the mower. No instructions on how to do that and couldn't find any attachment point to utilize it.

Poor instructions on how to get the mower started.

The ATV Quick Switch Utility System used to mount the mower to the ATV is a poor design. I had to fabricate some spacers so the pin would be level enought to hold the mower properly.

Operator's manual is VERY basic, of little use for trouble shooting of problem resolution.

When all is working it mows well, but oh my the problems I've had.

I have purchased and assembled many products but none of such poor quality as this one. First I was lacking in bolts and nuts. I purchased $14.00 worth bolts and nuts. The most serious problem was a part that was lacking a hole and the one whole in the part was incorrectly placed. The lever that raises and lowers the wheels could not be installed until I ground off the end so as to line up the one hole that was drilled and drilled a second hole for the two retaining bolts.Had I not had the tools to grind and drill, I would have sent this back.

Although it took three of us a while to put it together, the assembly was straightforward. With four concrete blocks sitting horizontally and bungeed on, it worked well. I was able to aerate my two acre yard in about an hour. The ground was damp, but not muddy and it made perfect plugs. I made passes at 90 degrees to each other in some open areas. You have to be careful not to let it tip backward when unhitched, but otherwise, it's easy to use.

I was pleased and plan to use it again next spring. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I came here looking for a part for my unit, the same company makes the Statesmann II for Southern States & Ace Hardware stores, even though it is an Earthway product. My crossmember piece which attaches to the frame & the axle rusted after 1 year of use. Now I can't seem to find them or get the part to fix the thing... it seems they want me to buy another whole unit for another 59.99... nope not throwing 59.99 away every 2 years. I want something that is going to last 10 years or more the first time I buy it. This is not built to last more than 2 years..and I kept mine in a shed all winter too..

I got the 42 inch because I wanted it narrower than the 48. It came mostly assembled all I needed to do was bolt the tow bar on and the lift lever. I didn't need to buy any nuts or bolts. Took all of six minutes. The build is heavier than I expected. I filled up the weight box and off I went. I am pleased with the service and construction. Only one thing. the cardboard box it was shipped in is a bit to flimsy many of the spikes had came through the sides. But nothing on the aerator was damaged. Hope the rest of the items it the delivery van faired that well.

This is a well-made item and does what it's intended to do. I live in Mississippi, and our red clay becomes concrete in our long hot summers- this wouldn't be effective at that time of the year. However, I've been using it in the spring when we have moisture in the ground and it does the job well. Unless you have soft soil, you'll need to fill it with water though, otherwise it will just ride along the surface. Also, assuming that you have the water in it, forget about your average lawn tractor pulling it. I tried with a John Deere LT160 (17 HP) and it had the horses, but the lawn tires in the back couldn't get enough grip and just spun. Fortunately, I've got a John Deere Gator and that handles the job just fine. This item is well made (comes from China-wow) and is easy to assemble. You _will_ need to grease the two sleeves on each end unless you want to entertain your neighbors with the sounds of a thousand birds singing. Oh, get the wheel kit. Unless you can stop and leave it where you unhitch it, you won't be able to push/pull/maneuver it by hand.

This thing really works great. I am on 1 1/2 acres and it makes aeration of the yard easy. Only one thing. Make sure you put down some plywood when crossing crosswalks for when it is full of water it will chip it up pretty good. Thats how good it is.

I purchased this to try and resolve my dust bowl lawn. It was easy to put together and I pulled it behind by lawn tractor with it empty. It can be filled with water to increase its weight, but I tried it empty. I made several passes on the lawn and then put seed down and then made another pass. Well my lawn has never looked so good. In the past, rains would wash the seed away and it never filled in. This time the holes made by the very well made steele tines and the weight of the drum, allowed the grass seed to enter the soil and not get washed away.

It's very well made and did an outstanding job and that was with it empty, so with a load of water the tines would go even deeper and allow the seed to get an even better start. It was well worth the money and if you have shed to store it you can't go wrong.

Pretty hard to separate this kit from the aerator- you'll need it. First off, you can't move the aerator by hand without the wheel kit. Second, if you will have to go over any paved surface (asphalt, concrete, etc) the aerator will tear the surface up unless you have this kit. The parts are well-made, powder paint, assembly is about half an hour. You will need a source of air as the tires are deflated for shipment. (No figure is given for psi inflation- I arbitrarily used 22 psi.) Worth the money- and just about necessary.
